FAQS

This section has all the answers you need

The Canaletto SMART concept is the result of years of research aimed at developing a system that guarantees the most essential features for suspended ceilings.

Our range of solutions was born from the expertise and needs of our current Technical Manager (a former master craftsman and business owner), who addressed all the challenges encountered during specific installations – challenges that continue to define the art of creating a perfect suspended ceiling to this day.

  • ALIGNS THE SUSPENDED CEILING WITH WALLS THAT HAVE A TEXTURED FINISH;
  • ENHANCES THE AESTHETIC QUALITY OF THE SUSPENDED CEILING;
  • ALLOWS FOR THE INSTALLATION OF LIGHTING FIXTURES (LEDS, SPOTLIGHTS, ETC.).
  • ENSURES FLEXIBILITY AT THE JUNCTION BETWEEN THE WALL AND SUSPENDED CEILING,
  • REDUCING STRUCTURAL LOADS;
  • OFFERS THERMO-ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE;
  • MAKES INSTALLATION STRAIGHTFORWARD.

Driven by these needs, Canaletto Smart Srl, headquartered in Altamura, has launched industrial production using advanced technologies and, in collaboration with various professionals, is able to operate throughout the country.

Today, Canaletto Smart Srl has a corporate structure that operates with a partnership approach. Our philosophy is: Professionalism, Teamwork, Experience and Expertise.

Business owners in the interior finishing industry are always on the lookout for products that enhance their company’s image while being easy to install, even for more complex and unique structures. This helps to ensure shorter timeframes and appropriate compensation for the work done.

These are critical factors that all craft businesses consider to stay competitive and dynamic in a market where high labor costs can be especially challenging for small and medium enterprises.

The Canaletto SMART system embodies the qualities typical of a high-end product: easy to work with,
straightforward to install, with reliable joint strength and a high-quality aesthetic finish. That is why the Canaletto SMART system deserves the attention of all interior finishing professionals.

When we closely examine the connection between some suspended ceilings and walls, whether modular or plasterboard, we often notice many unpleasant imperfections that are not always fixable, even when the work is done by skilled artisans, as it is ultimately manual labor.

Looking at suspended ceilings with a modular structure, the perimeter trim applied to the wall is visually unappealing due to imperfect gaps caused by the wall or plaster’s unevenness. This significantly impacts the overall aesthetic of the suspended ceiling and, consequently, the space itself.

In the case of plasterboard suspended ceilings, we notice other flaws, such as imprecise corner joints between the ceiling and the wall, especially if the wall is a darker color than the suspended ceiling;

The perimeter gap, made with current techniques, follows all the wall’s imperfections;

Plaster delamination in the area near the suspended ceiling-wall junction. These issues arise because there is no perimeter profile that separates the movements of the two structures, that corrects, and perfects the connection between the suspended ceiling and the wall.

If you compare the installation times of two suspended ceilings – one installed using the traditional method with a U-shaped perimeter guide directly fixed to the wall, with the corner reinforced and plastered using micro-perforated tape (which comes with all the difficulties this process entails), and the other using the Canaletto SMART system – it becomes clear that the time required to install a traditional suspended ceiling is significantly longer than that for a ceiling fitted with

Canaletto SMART. In this respect, the Canaletto SMART system stands out as an effective answer to all the questions within the dry construction systems market.

Canaletto SMART is made from a material called WATER-RESISTANT MDF
“Medium-Density Fiberboard”.

After thorough research and careful analysis of the many materials available today to create the Canaletto SMART profile, WATER-RESISTANT MDF achieved the best results, passing both physical and mechanical tests conducted in the laboratory.

This material is very well-suited to this type of work. In fact, manufacturers of doors, moldings, and baseboards often use it to achieve excellent results with lacquered finishes.

On the inner side, Canaletto SMART is finished with a white water-based single-component primer, allowing it to be finished with any type of water-based paint following the correct preparation of the suspended ceiling.

DOES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF WATER-RESISTANT MDF CHANGE OVER TIME?

Since WATER-RESISTANT MDF contains resins that make it moisture-resistant, even when exposed to thermal stress, it remains very durable and its characteristics are highly stable over time.

The SMART Channel has been designed in MDF because it allows for effective alignment and finishing of the suspended ceiling. Laboratory tests have shown it to be highly reliable for connecting components using self-tapping screws. In fact, the construction of a suspended ceiling usually involves fixing elements such as the metal framework, consisting of U-shaped perimeter tracks that house C-shaped studs necessary for suspension.

The 16 mm thickness of the MDF was chosen not only to provide strength to the profile, but also to allow all processing and fixing operations to be carried out on the outer part of the SMART Channel, making installation quick and convenient for the installer.

To install the SMART Channel, in addition to the basic tools typically available to a drywall installer (such as a drill, screwdriver, laser level, and small hand tools), a small miter saw is also required to cut the profile according to specific needs. The minimal investment needed to purchase this tool ensures precise edge finishing and perfectly cut 45° angles—details that are often subject to disputes during the construction of a suspended ceiling.

Laboratory resistance tests have shown that using the SMART Channel installation kit is essential to ensure maximum reliability in terms of hold and flexibility, and guarantees proper wall alignment.

The installation kit includes accessories such as:

Brackets that position the SMART Channel perfectly square to the wall;

Joint plates that help maintain proper profile continuity;

Calibrated screws that do not damage the visible part of the SMART Channel and easily penetrate both the MDF and 0.6 mm metal framing without excessive effort;

Universal wall plugs, suitable for fixing into both solid and hollow substrates.

The contents of the installation kit are sufficient for the application of one full package of each SMART Channel item. This simplifies logistics for both the distributor and the installer, while also avoiding unnecessary material waste on the job site.

The length of all SMART Channel profile items is 1,850 mm.

Standard installation requires the placement of 5 metal brackets along this length. Brackets should be fixed with screws starting approximately 40–50 mm from the ends, with the remaining brackets installed at intervals of approximately 400 mm.

Another important feature of the SMART Channel is its ability to align the suspended ceiling joint to the wall even when the plaster is uneven. By adjusting the screw on the wall plug inserted into the bracket, it is possible to carefully regulate the fit against the wall.

On the outer part of the SMART Channel, there is a precise groove treated with a special bonding agent, which offers two advantages: it allows the installer to use it as a reference point for fixing the U-shaped perimeter track, and it creates a “bed” of joint compound between the SMART Channel and the drywall, facilitating the application of the fiberglass mesh tape.

The joint treatment should be carried out using the same technique that installers apply to all drywall panel joints.

Many installers use mesh tape instead of fiberglass paper tape for convenience and faster installation. However, tests have shown that fiberglass paper tape withstands greater tension.

It should be noted that the joint compound used can be from any brand, as long as it is fast-setting, adhesive, and low-shrinkage. That said, all the major gypsum board manufacturers worldwide currently offer very high-quality joint compounds.

Absolutely yes, the SMART Channel system was also designed to synchronize the work of designers, planners, craftsmen, and retailers.
